Three years ago when asked her age Vilma, like the other children in Jacodu Roma community, would reply with a blank look. When living a feral lifestyle, ones age and date of birth is just not important in trying to survive each day. Because with the Jacodu Children’s Project, we want to show how to survive each day in a productive way, it is important to attend to details such as birthdays and age.
Knowledge of age and date of birth gives meaning to a lifestyle, it was important last year to begin celebrating the birthdays of the children at Jacodu. They now can acknowledge they have reached a certain age and also that birthdays lead them towards reaching milestones in their lives.
Now the children and teenagers from Jacodu Children’s Project have begun to have an opportunity in their lives that their parents did not have. They can now have a different outlook on life. Saying Happy Birthday to them once a year is just a small detail, but has a big impact giving a new enthusiasm for existence.
